When Rachel Ann Cullen bared her soul in her first book, Running For My Life, she had no real idea of the impact her story would have on so many people.

That book was a very personal account of how a love of running helped Rachel battle her own mental health challenges. It was very honest, entertaining but perhaps most importantly, it was inspirational.

Rachel was contacted by numerous people who had read her book and wanted to share their stories with her, the way that running had helped them battle mental or physical health issues, or deal with the loss of a loved one.

Running For Our Lives is a collection of these stories. It is a truly inspirational read that helps restore faith in the human spirit and highlights the role that running can play in the healing process.

It also serves as a reminder of the benefit of running and not always racing. Understanding that the wrong relationship with running can have a negative impact on mental wellbeing is an equally important message to be taken from this book. The danger of obsessively chasing personal bests and the impact that can have on self-worth, as opposed to running for the sheer pleasure of it, is something we should all take note of.

Rachel weaves elements of her own running journey into the book which helps illustrate her understanding of the experiences of each of her contributors. Although a tough read at times you can’t help but be inspired by this book and I have no doubt that many readers will find a connection with one or more of the stories.
