Tor Des Geants 2018: The Story So Far

We are now 70 hours into the infamous Tor Des Geants race and there is still a long way to go for many of the runners. This 205 mile race with 24,000m of ascent is brutal and finishing it is a huge achievement. At the time of writing 188 runners have been forced to stop and 706 remain in the race, but it’s likely that many of those will fail to finish.

Incredibly, the end is in sight for the lead runners now. Italian Franco Colle is due into the last checkpoint at Refuge Bertone at 1.24pm today, then there’s a long and no doubt painful descent to the finish line in Courmayeur. He is currently an hour in front of the second placed runner, Canadian Galen Reynolds. Two more Italians are in third and fourth – Peter Kienzl and Oliviero Bosatelli (who won the race in 2016 and has a tattoo to commemorate it!). In fifth place is a Japanese runner who is part of Team Montane, Kouta Toriumi.

The leading woman, Silvia Trigueros Garrote, has been hovering around the top ten overall for all of the race so far. At one point she was in seventh, but she’s currently in 11th place. A few places behind her is our top British man, Jez Bragg! At the time of writing Jez is in 14th and he has about 45 miles to go. Jamie Aarons is our top placed British woman, currently in 21st overall. Having been forced to stop last year she must be really determined to finish the race this year.

Ireland’s Paul Tierney is back for his second attempt at the race and is currently in 35th place. He will want to improve on his 25th place in 99 hours last year and there’s still time to do this. So much of this race comes down to when you sleep so the places can still change around a lot.

Jenn Gaskell of Team Montane is still going strong in her third Tor. As is Gary Dalton, who has started this race before but never finished, so we’re all willing him on to complete it this time!

We’re not even halfway to the ultimate cut-off time of 150 hours yet so there’s still lots that can happen!
