The ultrarunning GOAT Kilian Jornet returns to Western States 100 later this month – 15 years on from his debut there in what was dubbed the iconic ‘Unbreakabale’ edition.
And he’s apparently looking for a pacer!
Read on to find out more about a potential once-in-a-lifetime opportunity…
‘Be part of history in motion’
NNormal, the brand he co-founded, posted the following on Instagram:
“Job Ad: Pacer for @kilianjornet at Western States 100.
“Yes, seriously.
“Kilian returns to the Western States 100, one of the most prestigious ultramarathons on Earth. Keep him company, keep him on course, and try to keep up.
“It’s hot, iconic, and your chance to be part of history in motion.
“Think you’ve got what it takes? Apply now via the bio link. Or forward it to a friend with questionable judgment.
“Application closes Thursday, June 12th at 23:59.”
An ‘April Fool’ a month or two late, a brilliant marketing campaign or totally serious? You decide but the application form is here.
‘You’ll need legs of steel’
Kilian himself said: “I’m currently preparing to run the Western States 100-mile and I’m looking for someone to join as one of my pacers.
“So if you are someone who is fit, sign up for the challenge. I look forward to running with you soon. Good luck!”

And there was a LinkedIn screenshot which seemingly had a few more details – it’s definitely not for the faint-hearted!
What you’ll actually be doing:
Survive approx 20 miles of high-altitude trail at Kilian’s ‘casual’ pace
Stay cool when he drops a six-minute mile… uphill
Be the calm in the chaos (and carry a gel or two)
You’ll need:
Legs of steel and a head that doesn’t panic
Trail sense, stamina and a sense of humor
Kilian himself booked his place at Western States thanks to bagging one of three ‘Golden Tickets’ at Chianti Ultra-Trail by UTMB in March.
It will be his first appearance in the fabled American race since his win in 2011.
