The second stage of the ‘toughest foot race on earth’ was a relatively short one (35km) but in terms of the women’s race, potentially a decisive one.
For defending champion Maryline Nakache of France massively extended her lead – and in the men’s event Mohamed El Morabity took a big step in front of brother Rachid.
Here’s the latest from the Marathon des Sables…
Mohamed moves ahead
The men’s race was described by the official media as “a fierce battle throughout the stage, but no changes in the top 5”.
But that downplayed the huge move made by Mohamed El Morabity over Rachid.
Just seconds separated them on stage one – and they were locked together for most of last year’s race.
But after stage two, Mohamed is nearly five minutes to the good.
Nakache takes charge
The second stage was just under marathon distance but it potentially blew apart the women’s race.
Maryline Nakache led from start to finish. Behind her, compatriot Agathe Teillet-Magot moved up one place and Desiree Linden (USA) secured a spot on the podium for now.

The big loser was previous winner Aziza El Amrany (MAR) who has huge ground to make up in fourth.
