The eagerly-awaited return of ultrarunning GOAT Kilian Jornet to Western States remains in the balance – and for very good reason.
The man who has won every title that matters and set numerous incredible records is looking for another Western States win to add to his 2011 crown.
And the presence of the 37-year-old Spaniard would be the icing on the cake for what potentially looks the greatest field ever assembled for the iconic race in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Chianti Golden Ticket
But to book his place, even a great like Jornet needs a Golden Ticket this year.
And the plan had been to earn that at the 120km Chianti Ultra Trail by UTMB on March 22, one of six ‘qualifying’ races.
However, writing on Instagram, Jornet explained: “Training is going really well this winter, but life has its own plans sometimes!
“Our little one is due right around Chianti Ultra Trail – where I would like to race for the chance of a golden ticket to Western States.
“That’s a pretty familiar story for many of us: trying to balance family life, work and bigger goals in the mountains.”

‘Bigger things than racing’
So all up in the air for now, but as Kilian says: “Western States has been on my mind, but some things are bigger than racing.
“Crossing fingers that it all works out, but for now, I’m focused on supporting Emelie and welcoming a new addition to the family!”
Should nature take its course and require Jornet to miss the Chianti Ultra Trail by UTMB event, the Spaniard would have one final chance to earn a Golden Ticket at the end of April.
The Canyons Endurance Runs by UTMB is scheduled in California, USA, for April 26, with the top three men and women finishers earning a spot at Western States.
