Reagan McCoy and Karen Dunn claimed wins amid torrid conditions at the 2023 Eastern States 100 in Pennsylvania.
The 103-mile looped route around the Pine Creek waterway in the Allegheny Plateau features 6,000m of elevation gain and was doused in rain for long spells amid thunderstorms.
Both McCoy and Dunn are first time winners of the race, which forms part of the Pennsylvania Triple Crown of Mountain Running along with the Hyner 50k and Worlds End 100k.
McCoy march
McCoy came home just over half an hour clear in the men’s Eastern States 100, reaching the finish around 3:25am local time on Sunday.
The win completes a stunning Pennsylvania Triple Crown of Mountain Running effort from McCoy in 2023 – he came second at the Hyner 50k in April before claiming victory at Worlds End 100k in June.
McCoy clocked 22:23:59 as the overall winner, while Eddie Pantoja, some 35:36 further back, grabbed second ahead of Raymond Stoltzfus, with less than 10 minutes separating the other two podium finishers.
Dunn dominance
Meanwhile, Dunn cruised to victory in the women’s Eastern States 100, taking seventh overall as she crossed the line in 25:30:54.
Dunn overcame last year’s winner Justyna Wilson to take the title, eclipsing her rival’s 2022 time by more than half an hour.
At the time of writing, Wilson was on course for a podium finish, with Colleen Moffatt looking likely to pick up second.
