The torrential rain which has caused devastation in parts of Spain led to both the longest-distance races at the weekend’s Mallorca by UTMB being cancelled.
The SDT (100M) and the M5000 (100K) were the events in question, with neither taking place and runner safety as the top priority.
Devastating flooding around Valencia has caused over 200 deaths and Barcelona was also placed on high alert this week.
Challenging times
Xavier Pocino, the Race Director of Mallorca by UTMB, said: “On behalf of the Mallorca by UTMB organization, we want to express our sincere gratitude to all participants, volunteers, and local communities for their understanding and unwavering support during these challenging times.
“Everyone – runners, volunteers, medical staff, and institutions – has given their best, demonstrating incredible resilience and commitment.
“This event not only celebrates the beauty of our island but also the solidarity and passion that unite us. Thank you to each and every one of you. Together, we continue to promote sports and nature in Mallorca.”
OCC a target for Wyder
However both the 47K and 26K races did take place and Judith Wyder, the winner of the Marathon du Mont-Blanc this season, was a class apart in the latter.
The Swiss star dominated from start to finish to cross the line in 2:13:32, more than 10 minutes clear of her closest rival who was Spain’s Isabel Calero.
It ticked off an important last task of the season for Wyder who said on Instagram afterwards: “It’s a wrap! I’ve got my “stone” and can be at the start of the UTMB week 2025!
“I only need a finish in a UTMB race for the 2025 OCC race, so I decided to go for a shorter distance at the end of this season!
“It’s incredibly technical and beautiful! And for me it was the perfect end to the season!”
