Hamburg half-marathon postponed as scorching heatwave continues to grip Europe

Hamburg's sold-out half-marathon, due to be held this weekend, has been postponed as heatwave temperatures could hit 40C.

Organisers of the Hamburg half-marathon have announced that this weekend’s race has been postponed due to the scorching heatwave that continues to wreak havoc across Europe.

Temperatures are pushing towards record June highs, with some forecasters even predicting they could reach 40C in the coming days. Several heat warnings have also been issued, with authorities rightly concerned about the adverse effects of such intense weather.

This week saw Germany record its hottest night on record in nearly seven years, and with no sign of things cooling before Sunday’s planned race, organisers say they have no choice but to postpone.

Increased demand for emergency services

A statement issued on Wednesday explained how a new date would be finalised and that runners would likely be offered the opportunity to either ‘keep their entry or choose an alternative option’.

BMS The Running Society went on to explain how it was the ‘most difficult decision we have had to make in the history of this event’ as they promised that an alternative date would be found for the race in the near future.

“After carefully assessing the current weather situation and holding extensive discussions with experts, the relevant authorities, and our partners, we have come to the conclusion that the 32nd Hella Hamburg Half cannot take place as planned on June 28, 2026,” it read.

“Despite implementing the most comprehensive weather protection concept in the history of the Hella Hamburg Half and making further adjustments over the past few days, we cannot currently rule out with sufficient certainty the possibility of an increased demand for emergency and rescue services.

‘We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience’

“This could place additional strain on essential public services. Furthermore, we have a responsibility to you as participants, to our volunteers, service providers, and our entire team.

“We are fully aware that many of you have spent months preparing for this event and may already have incurred expenses. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this situation may cause.

“For us as organisers, this is also a significant challenge. Nevertheless, we are convinced that this decision is the right one in the interest of everyone’s safety. We kindly ask for your understanding and will provide further information as soon as possible.”

A record 24,000 runners had registered for the half-marathon, which takes the athletes on a 21.1km route through the Hanseatic city.

The IRONMAN Frankfurt race is expected to go ahead as planned, but it remains to be seen if decisions are made to shorten the bike or run sections to protect the nearly 3,000 athletes who are signed up to take part.
