London Marathon record breaker Eilish McColgan continues dream week by getting engaged

Published on

London Marathon record breaker Eilish McColgan has continued a quite incredible week by accepting a marriage proposal from long-term partner Michael Rimmer.

The reigning Commonwealth 10,000m champion smashed her marathon debut in London at the weekend, breaking the Scottish record in the process.

Then, after travelling to Japan in the aftermath of the race, she announced on her Instagram account on Wednesday that former Olympian Rimmer had got down on one knee to propose in front of Mount Fuji.

“Yes to forever” says Eilish

McColgan posted: “Absolutely worth the jet lag. YES to forever! 💍🏔 ❤️ #offthemarket.”

The couple have been together for more than a decade, and their engagement quickly got the seal of approval from mum Liz, whose PB of 2:26:52 Eilish surpassed with her 2:24:25 in London on Sunday.

She wrote: “So happy these two are engaged. Michael has been with Eilish in every part of her success and disappointments.

“Made for each other”

“Sport is not an easy platform for relationships but they were made for each other. Welcome to the crazy family Michael. Live long happy and together for ever.”

Fans and fellow athletes rushed to congratulate the couple on Instagram, flooding them with supportive messages.

Before she followed in her London Marathon-winning Mum’s footsteps, four-time Olympian McColgan admitted she was scared of the big race – but she was all smiles as she accepted Liverpudlian Rimmer’s proposal.

Giving Back to Track

The 34-year-old got together with Rimmer, 39, after he retired from the sport and he has been coaching her for the last few years.

As well as training together, the couple are business partners, having set up a not-for-profit organisation Giving Back to Track together to help support young athletes.
