Ultra star Francesco Puppi hopes to be back running soon after having surgery on a fracture near his right wrist.
The hugely popular Italian has been documenting his journey towards this year’s Western States in a series of videos called ‘Going Further’.
The latest is embedded below and the title is in reference to what is a big step up in trip having racked up plenty of victories at shorter distances.
Two injury setbacks
His record over the last three seasons has been incredible – with no fewer than 14 race wins.
They include OCC over 55km at the UTMB World Championships in 2023 and then the 101km CCC there last August.

And he defended his title in the 46km race at Chianti Ultra Trail by UTMB in March despite a troubled build-up after he dislocated his left shoulder in an early fall at the Black Canyons 100km in February.
Another setback happened recently though following a fall when hiking and it’s made it a tight window to be in peak form for Western States in late June.
‘There’s a race to be run at the end of June’
Explaining more on his Instagram page, Puppi said: “Running with a broken arm is easier and less painful than running with a dislocated shoulder. Now I know..
“Four days ago I fell while hiking on an icy trail and broke my right radius near the wrist. With my orthopedic, we decided that I’ll have surgery next week to hopefully speed up the recovery process, improve the functionality of the wrist and return to training as quickly as possible.
“There’s a race to be run at the end of June. But mostly, I just freaking love running
“We will be so back 👋🏾”
Surgery has now taken place and involved having a titanium alloy plate and eight screws fitted which should speed up the recovery process.
That began on Sunday with him enjoying two epic Paris-Roubaix cycling races on TV and we wish him well with his upcoming return to training.
