The First Spartan Stadion Comes To The UK

Spartan Stadion

A few months ago we brought you news about Spartan’s latest race, the Stadion. We wanted to find out a bit more this new race series. What is a Stadion and what obstacles does it involve?

Spartan Race is reviving the original Ancient Olympic Games’ Stadion. On Saturday 23rd November 2019 Spartan Race will head to Twickenham for the first ever Spartan Stadion event to be held in the iconic Twickenham Stadium, for what is set to be one of the hottest fitness events of the year.

First things first, what is a Stadion?

The Spartan Stadion is a 5km obstacle course race, where competitors will have to overcome 20 of Spartan’s most fun and exhilarating obstacles, all suitable for racers of any abilities.

The Spartan Stadion is inspired by an ancient running event that was first held at the Olympic games over 2,800 years ago. It tested strength, speed and willpower and was a highly celebrated event, with competitors coming afar to test their abilities.

On Saturday November 23rd, Spartan Race will take over the iconic Twickenham Stadium to host the first ever UK Stadion event. Spartan’s will be competing on the same ground that rugby legends have tread. The stadium has become a focal point of rugby history and heritage – hosting its first rugby game back in 1910!

What can you expect at a Stadion?

The obstacles scattered around the course will provide racers with several exciting and unfamiliar challenges. 2,561 manpower hours have gone into building the course, with the tallest obstacle amounting to a staggering 7.6m!

Competitors will weave their way through sloping walkways, navigate the winding corridors and scale the stadium stairs. The functional fitness boom across the UK means that Spartan have incorporated CrossFit style obstacles involving box jumps, low crawls and carries into the course.

The course will be mud free and the famous 30-burpee penalty for missing an obstacle, synonymous with traditional Spartan race events, has been reduced to 15 to make this a fast-paced course. Perfect for smashing those PB’s!

Can anyone compete?

People of all abilities can take part and the 5km course is the perfect distance for those competing in their first Spartan obstacle course, whilst also accommodating for those experienced Spartans who are looking to race against the clock.

On the day there are different heats that will cater for people of all abilities and racers have the option of completing the race as a team of up to 16 people. Completing the course as a group is a great way of adding some extra fun and excitement to the race and keeping motivation going all the way to the finish line.

There is also a separate event for kids, making this a great day out for all the family. The event is a scaled down version of the adult’s event and young adventurers will have a chance to climb and crawl over smaller versions of some of Spartan signature obstacles.

They will tackle the sandbag carry and even be able to throw a spear as they head around the course. It is open to children aged 4-14 years old, a perfect way to inspire young thrill seekers to be more active and get outdoors. All the children taking part will be categorised into age groups so they are racing against children the same as them.

What should I wear?

Steer clear of cotton and stick to tight synthetic clothes that wick moisture away from the body. Clothes that dry quickly are important too; wet clothes will slow you down and make you cold! In terms of footwear, make sure you choose running shoes with good traction.

Are spectators allowed?

Envisage obstacle course, meets day-festival. There will be food and drink on offer throughout the day, and spectators are welcome, ensuring friends and family can cheer on their loved ones. This will help to create a festival atmosphere never seen before at a Spartan race.

What about the venue?

Twickenham Stadium is the world’s largest venue for rugby union games. Originally a market garden, the land that Twickenham stands on today was purchased and converted into a rugby pitch by the Rugby Football Union in 1907.
