Ludovic Pommeret (FRA), now in his fifties, won his third men’s Hardrock 100 title on the trot with a record-breaking display but Courtney Dauwalter (USA) went one better with a fourth straight women’s success and another course best, albeit she skipped the event 12 months ago.
The 102-mile race in Colorado was run in a clockwise direction this year – it alternates each time – and Pommeret’s time of 21:11:36 beat his own course record of 21:33:04, which he set in 2024.
But his main rival Tom Evans, part of a select group to win both Western States and UTMB, dropped out around the halfway point having been in second for much of the race until then.
Dauwalter meanwhile put on another incredible show in the women’s race as the ultrarunning GOAT won by a huge margin and finished fifth overall.
Her time of 26:03:10 also topped her own clockwise course record of 26:11:49 from two years ago.
Here’s how the two races played out in what were relatively warm conditions, amplified by the high altitude.
Women’s race
Dauwwalter stamped her authority on the women’s race from the outset.
She led after 20 miles, with Tara Dower (USA), ‘fresh’ from Western States, in second.
Handies Peak is the highest point of the race and comes around two thirds of the way – by that point Dauwalter was out on her own and over half an hour in front of her previous course record split.
Things did get harder later on as the clock showed she only had around 10 minutes to spare for a new record with 10 miles remaining.
But she made it back to Silverton nearly nine minutes to the good and with a customary smile as she crossed the line.
Only four men had reached the finish ahead of her and now her closest female rival was Careth Arnold (USA) who was nearly four hours back, with a further two hours to Dower in third.
Men’s race
Pommeret, Evans, and Jimmy Elam were the first three in the opening 20 miles.
Pommeret, who had helped Evans recce parts of the course in the build up, was two minutes to the good, with a similar gap back to Elam in third.
The positions remained the same approaching halfway but by now Pommeret’s advantage had ballooned to nearly half an hour.
And it was soon after this point that Evans began to struggle.
He was overtaken for second by Elam and then the news came through that Evans had withdrawn before Grouse Gulch (mile 58).
Up front though Pommeret powered on and at Sloan Lake (mile 62) he was nearly 20 minutes ahead of his own course record schedule.
That progress continued and when he crossed the line and kissed the stone in Silverton the clock was stopped on 21:11:36, more than 20 minutes under his time from two years ago.
