The weekend just gone saw #Lazcon reach its conclusion in Foyil, Oklahoma.
The original intended end point of Laz Lake‘s epic trek across America had been San Francisco on the west coast – but the revised destination was both fitting and poignant.
There’s much more about that here.
The truth is out there says Laz
Seventy-year-old Lake, the genius who created the Barkley Marathons and Backyard Ultras, had spoken at the start of his adventure about getting away from the noise and negativity of the ‘real’ world.
And that was very much underlined at the finish, with his absorbing reflections on the bigger picture – essentially making the most of one’s own life and the different perspective that can bring.
Writing on his Facebook page – in his own inimitable style – he said…
“and i have one more comment before i wrap this up.
i have wanted to say it a million times
but there was always another story to tell….
“every day when i logged on to make my report
my “news feed” passed by on the way.
i saw the headlines.
i never had time to read any of the articles.
“every day i felt more sorry for the people who do have time to read them.
after a while i realized i had no need to read the stories.
that i was better off without reading them.
so much negativity.”
‘Stop believing that crap’
“i saw half of america
not all
but enough.
“how would i describe our country?
vibrant and alive.
do we not realize how much we have?
“how would i describe our people?
kind, generous, friendly.
do we not realize how good those around us are?
“everywhere i went people loved their home
they had good relationships with their neighbors.
they thought they lived in a great place.
but the rest of the country was in a mess…
“because they read every day what a mess it is in.
“stop believing that crap!
Things ‘pretty much turn out the way they should’
“it is changing.
i has always changed.
that is what the world does
and always will.
sometimes things dont turn out the way we thought they would
but they pretty much always turn out the way they should.
life is like a journey run.
you may have a plan on a map.
but every day you have to adjust your plan to the reality on the ground.
“here is the truth no one seems to want to tell you:
you live in the best place there is
in the best time there ever was to be there.”
A fascinating viewpoint – and in the middle of a year which globally will see more voters than any other point in history head to the polls, including of course the US Presidential Election on November 5th.
