If you’re a fan of the Threshold Sports race series which includes Race to the Stones, Race to the King and Race to the Tower, we’ve got good news for you, especially if you live in the North. They’ve just launched a new race: Race to the… Castle! The first one will take place on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th June 2020 in Northumberland.
The HEINEKEN Race to the Castle is a 100km ultra which will pass by and promote many local historical landmarks, including the finish at Bamburgh Castle, a royal fortress which has stood guard over Northumberland for over 1,400 years.
The breath-taking route will take a mixture of runners and walkers across some of the most varied and beautiful terrain the UK has to offer. Participants will start in Kirkharle and make their way through the world-renowned Northumberland National Park where they will have to overcome a variety of terrains including hilly woodland and stunning moorlands. Winding along the River Coquet, the route then changes to one of the most awe-inspiring but challenging coastlines of the North East. Here participants are faced with sandy trails all the way to the finish at the spectacular Bamburgh Castle.
Entries are open now. There are a variety of packages available for those who wish to take it on in one go and for those who would prefer to tackle the route over two days. Participants can camp at the half way basecamp located in Acklington. This offers delicious food and drink, bars, massages, tents and hot showers!

The launch of HEINEKEN Race to the Castle will mark Threshold Sports first venture into the North East and will become the fourth ultra-marathon in their award-winning Trail Series, which already includes Race to the Tower, Race to the King and Dixons Carphone Race to the Stones. Each event presents a unique challenge and gives participants the opportunity to explore and discover some of Britain’s most beautiful countryside.
